I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression for over ten years. After years of therapy, countless medications, and no relief, I began to walk. I walked through my neighborhood in Brooklyn, then through lower Manhattan. Twenty minutes turned into hours. I would walk everyday, sorting through my thoughts, carrying a camera, and capturing street art, people in transit, people hugging, road signs, birds, food carts. I was searching for connection with the world around me. I wanted to find the glint of beauty in the grime of the city. I wanted to prove to my turbulent mind that good can exist in the chaos. That I could hold a rare and precious something in what seemed like an all consuming nothing. Photography, in more ways than one, saved me.
My work is a collection of connection. It is a story of diamonds among coal. It celebrates the many moments that are often missed and overlooked. It opens a doorway to a world that depression locks up and hides away. A door held, a hand outstretched, a brief and fleeting sign that we are not alone.
